The lack of women or people of color on panels is a problem across virtually all professions.
But the Journalism and Women Symposium wants to address this issue when it comes to panels discussing issues of importance to journalists.
We will help panel organizers find expert women journalists to participate in their panels aimed at other journalists or the public.
If you’re looking to diversify your panel, please fill out this form detailing the location, the subject matter, the date and time and other information about your panel. JAWS will use our member database to suggest and provide contact information for potential panelists.
(We also encourage those seeking more diverse panelists to check out http://diversify.journalismwith.me/)
Why is this important? Part of the mission of Journalism and Women Symposium is a “more accurate portrayal of the whole society.”
We believe that should be the mission of any journalist. If we don’t reflect that broad audience, we may lack empathy for others and the issues they face. And our broader audience will not see themselves reflected in our work.
So next time you look around and see that there are no women on your panel, don’t just ask why and let it go. Ask JAWS and, with our hundreds of members, we’ll help you diversify your panel.

The Poynter-ACES Advanced Editing Certificate Training Package combines the teaching of expert editors with the power of Poynter’s industry-leading e-learning  platform at News University.  It is the latest training initiative developed in the Poynter-ACES partnership, started in 2013.
“We are delighted to help editors and writers elevate their skills with this advanced program,” said Teresa Schmedding, president of the American Copy Editors Society and managing editor at Rotary International. “ACES has always been committed to empowering editors, and this certificate helps us fulfill our mission in new and exciting ways.”
The Poynter-ACES Advanced Editing Certificate Training Package contains two components:
  • ACES Advanced Editing Online Group Seminar, a four-week faculty-led program that focuses on substantive editing and critical thinking skills across multiple platforms.
  • Accurate, Audience-Focused Editing Course Pack, a series of seven self-paced courses for experienced editors who want to refine their skills.
Those who complete both programs will receive the Advanced Editing Certificate. ACES members receive a discount on this program and all online courses at News University.
“There has never been a more critical time for thoughtful, strategic editing,” said Vicki Krueger, Poynter’s manager of marketing communications and former director of interactive learning at News University. “This partnership is a testament to the value of professional development as the arena of editors, writers and publishers grows across the media landscape.”
ACES and Poynter have developed more than 25 courses since the partnership started in 2013. More than 8,000 communications professionals, educators and students have enrolled in these programs to date, making it one of the most successful initiatives at News University.
ACES is a non-profit 501(c)(3) education and membership organization working toward the advancement of copy editors. Our aim is to provide solutions to editing problems, training and a place to discuss common issues. It is an international members’ alliance of editors working as freelancers and editors at corporations, newspapers, magazines, online news sites, public relations and marketing agencies.
The Poynter Institute for Media Studies is a global leader in journalism education and a strategy center that stands for uncompromising excellence in journalism, media and 21st century public discourse. Poynter faculty teach seminars and workshops at the Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., and at conferences and organizational sites around the world. Its e-learning division, News University, www.newsu.org, offers the world’s largest online journalism curriculum in seven languages, with more than 400 interactive courses and 330,000 registered users in more than 200 countries. The Institute’s website, www.poynter.org, produces 24-hour coverage of news about media, ethics, technology, the business of news and the trends that currently define and redefine journalism news reporting.
